Robots are coming. They’ve been around for years in a variety of settings, but vast technology leaps mean they’re quickly becoming far more advanced, soon they’ll be commonplace in care home settings.
But while robots in care homes are being welcomed as a way to help residents and staff deal with the daily demands of residential care, there are concerns too. Right at the top of that list of concerns for many is that the introduction of intelligent robots will mean that the all-important human touch is lost or diminished within the industry. However, all research and case studies so far point to the opposite of this being true.
So, how will robots actually enhance the care residents receive from employees?
They’ll free up time by handling routine tasks
Within the care sector, there are tasks that eat into employees’ time, such as preparing medication and organising paperwork, limiting how much they can simply chat and check on residents. With robots handling these routine tasks, care home employees will be able to better balance delivering essential health services with providing human interaction that charges can benefit from.
They can allow for greater investment in employees
While technology doesn’t require an investment to begin with, it can save significant sums when the long-term is factored in. Care homes with a forward-thinking approach can use these savings to invest in employees, from hiring a few extra pairs of hands to delivering further training.
Robots will be able to identify resident needs and alert staff
One of the most talked about robots that’s set to change the care industry is a humanoid robot that will interact with residents. However, this smart device won’t replace humans and can actually alert employees to the mood and needs of the person it’s communicating with. It means, should a resident show signs of distress, loneliness, or other negative emotions, an employee can be made aware far more quickly.
They could monitor training needs and opportunities
Training is a critical area for care home but managing it can be challenging. From noting which training aspects care home staff could benefit from receiving, alerting management teams to when training needs to be refreshed, and even offering training in an interactive way, robots will be able to improve how training is delivered.
Robots aren’t here to replace our current care staff, but instead support them with small tasks freeing them up to spend more time providing that valuable human interaction that’s so crucial to the health and happiness of care residents – robots are set to transform the care sector in a positive way.
